Training Description: (Multiple Realities— August 17th)

Due to the development of the internet, the existence of the extreme organized abuse of children is no longer a valid debate.  While much research and media interest has been given to the perpetrators and organizations, the victims of torture-based child trafficking remain largely unknown, unrecognized, and un-recognized by institutions and society at large.  Even in fields that treat trauma, how to help victims of that kind of trauma is pretty widely debated.

This day-long workshop addresses this need in as practical and direct a way as possible.  Less an exploration of how that abuse is perpetrated, we will be presenting micro- and macro- ways of helping a person begin to recover from that degree of abuse.  This includes:  recognizing the impacts and symptoms of that degree of traumatization; the very specific needs of that person in a therapeutic relationship; addressing the need for and development of functional resources and community as necessary to recovery; and some specific therapeutic practices and approaches to empower the therapist.

Objectives:

  • Identify three explicit differences in clinical presentation differentiating the effects of abuse vs. organized abuse.  Explore history taking approaches through an EMDR lens.

  • Identify three implicit symptoms of traumatic dissociation congruent with the experience of organized abuse survivors atypical of other types of abuse.  Examine considerations for case conceptualization through an EMDR lens.

  • List three external factors necessary to assess in order to impact the successful treatment of organized abuse survivors not present working with other survivors of trauma.  Create an EMDR focused treatment plan.

  • Explain the impact of social invisibility on the clinical presentation of traumatic dissociation.  Explore application of EMDR Phase 3-7 work.

  • Describe three methods of gradually increasing organized abuse survivors’ social connectivity outside the therapeutic dyad.  Explore application of EMDR Phase 3-7 work.
