Training Description and Learning Objectives
This course was developed a passion project to both educate providers and work to debunk stigma and myths around Dissociation and Dissociative Disorders. I learned quickly as a new EMDR Therapist 10 years ago that Foundational Training, while affirming and provided helpful basic information, could not effectively and thoroughly teach me how to work with this population due the limits of time and the necessity of providing solid basic EMDR knowledge first. There is much to know about the culture of this population and I couldn’t be more thrilled to share with you what I have learned and continue to learn daily that has been effective in modifying EMDR to working with Dissociation. I work with the entire spectrum of Dissociation daily in my work and still regularly consult with experts in the field. My training will include lecture and experiential learning. I will show you how I implement Fraser’s Table and using EMDR with DID through a live demo with a trusted colleague.
My hope is that you walk away with the following:
Having a basic understanding of the Spectrum of Dissociation to include: Depersonalization/Derealization, Dissociative Disorders: OSDD and DID, and Organized Extreme Abuse.
Can diagnosis Dissociative Disorders, recognize subtle symptoms, provide treatment planning, and can modify interventions for Dissociative Disorders.
Have an eclectic knowledge of various theories and modalities including: Ego State Theory, Pre-verbal Trauma, Structural Dissociation, Somatic Theories, and Integrated Family Systems. Working with Dissociation must include multiple theoretical orientations to effectively treat the entire spectrum.
Knowing how to use Fraser’s Table and EMD with a client with DID.
Feel like you had space to ask questions about the didactic learning and ask questions related to current cases.
Network with those who also work with Dissociative Disorders— my hope is that with enough attendance, we can break up into small groups for experiential learning.
I hold the following values around the Plural community:
People are the experts on their experience. My interventions and therapeutic presence are a combination what I have learned directly from Survivors and what I have learned from research and evidence based practices.
I believe Survivors first. I view maladaptive behaviors from a Parts work perspective and as an Attachment wound to be healed.
I provide Affirming care to the best of my ability and remain in the role of someone who is always learning and adapting.
I do NOT promote Integration of Systems as first line care. Many of my clients do not identify Plurality as a problem to fix and I honor their autonomy and choice in how they want to identify and live.
I do NOT lean heavily into Psychological screening tools to assess and use in treatment of Dissociative Disorders. These measures are important and can be useful, and also, can be over pathologizing and not always give an accurate view of a client’s presentation.
I welcome those with Lived Experience of Dissociation to attend my trainings, to collaborate, and call me in if I present information that may not be accurate or based on current experiences.
Objectives:
Develop Competency and Confidence using the DSM V and DES to recognize the symptoms and presentation of Dissociative Disorders with an affirming, Trauma sensitive approach
Develop Competency and Confidence in a working knowledge of Dissociative Personality States and learn evidenced based techniques that are affirming and Trauma sensitive
Learn, practice and be able to implement the Meeting Place technique (Fraser’s Table)
Learn, practice, and be able to implement modifications to EMDR standard protocol to work with a Dissociative System (Ego State/IFS, Fraser’s Table, EMD)
