Tarowyn Shields, LPC (She/Her/Hers)
I am eager to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds on their unique challenges as they navigate our rapidly changing world. My counseling specialties are in neurodiversity, queer identity, depression, anxiety, and trauma. Additionally, my doctoral work specializes in autistic adults. My approach to counseling integrates trauma-informed approaches, critical theory, and wellness in the effort to improve your holistic quality of life.
I am a multiply neurodivergent person with autism and ADHD being the most salient. I am also a cisgender, white, mid-sized, bisexual woman, married in an age-gap relationship. These identities inextricably shape the way in which I interact with the world and inform my worldview. Because of my life experiences, I strive to be curious, empathetic, and compassionate in everything that I do.
I hope to create a safe space in the therapeutic relationship where you can feel heard, understood, and accepted. My goals in our work together would be to help you heal and grow in your identities in ways that allow you to live well and authentically. If you feel we could be a good therapeutic match, I would be eager to meet with you.
In my free time, I enjoy cross-stitching with a good show, being in nature, engaging with music, and helping my spouse with his model railroad. I am also in the early stages of learning to play the hurdy-gurdy!
What does trauma recovery mean to you?
Trauma recovery is grounded in resilience. Even if you don’t believe yourself to be resilient – you got yourself to here. One way or another, you survived and there is power in that fact alone. Together, we can make sense of the pieces and figure out how you would like to write the rest of the story so that you can start to thrive. Healing yourself is a difficult endeavor and that cannot be minimized. But recovery is not impossible. Undertaking this journey can result in you being able to find your own path forward. The meanings of what occurred, or their reasons, can be defined by you and therein lies your autonomy. Your choice. You get to decide where to go from here and I can be there alongside you in your self-creation.
