Dissociation
If you are experiencing any of the following, the counselors below have experience helping people successfully navigate these symptoms.
Have you ever experienced loss of time (knowing you were awake and moving around but have no memory of it?)
Have you ever felt younger than your biological age?
Have you ever heard different voices inside your head that were not your own and not related to psychosis?
Have you ever felt you had different “parts” or people that made up your body?
Have you ever felt disconnected from your body, your environment, or the present moment?
Have you ever noticed yourself detaching, compartmentalizing, masking, or disengaging for long periods of time to distance yourself from a traumatic situation for the purpose of self protection?
Dissociation Is Not a Bad Word
It’s a brilliant survival strategy.
At Imagine Recovery Counseling, we understand dissociation not as pathology, but as protection. When the world feels unsafe emotionally, physically, or relationally the nervous system can pull us away from overwhelming experience. Dissociation may look like zoning out, losing time, feeling like you’re floating outside your body, or not recognizing yourself in the mirror. However it shows up, it’s a response that made sense.
We work with the full spectrum of dissociative experience, from everyday disconnection to Complex PTSD and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Our approach is respectful, grounded, and never rushed. You don’t have to reveal everything to begin healing.
You might be navigating:
Emotional numbing or shutdown
Time loss, memory gaps, or feeling "not real"
Parts of self that feel separate or disconnected
Trauma linked dissociation or freeze responses
Chronic self doubt or fear of being “too much”
Misdiagnosis or dismissal in other clinical settings
We specialize in trauma and complex dissociation, and we understand that DID and other dissociative disorders are often misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or minimized. At Imagine Recovery, you’ll find clinicians trained in parts work (IFS), EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, and polyvagal informed care all delivered with consent, attunement, and a deep respect for your system’s intelligence.
In therapy, we’ll support you to:
Build internal safety and communication between parts
Strengthen grounding and co regulation tools
Reduce shame and increase self trust
Work with trauma in ways that are titrated and choice based
Move toward integration whatever that looks like for you
You don’t have to “fix” your dissociation to begin healing. You need a space where it’s not feared or judged.
Reach out today to begin working with a therapist who understands the terrain of dissociation and honors your system’s resilience.
